Tips Before You Search

Tip #1: Search by the film/novel title in its original language, as well as its English-translated title. (provided below for convenience)

  • Camilo Jose Cela, The Hive = La colmena
  • Italo Calvino, Into the War = L'entrata in guerra
  • Jean Anouilh, Antigone
  • Franz Kafka, The Trial = Der Process
  • Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, The Night of the Shooting Stars = La notte di san lorenzo
  • Bertrand Tavernier, Safe Conduct = Laissez-passer
  • Victor Erice, The Spirit of the Beehive = El espiritu de la colmena
  • Wolfgang Becker, Good Bye, Lenin (okay as-is)
  • Florien Henckel von Donnersmarck, The Lives of Others = Das Leben der Anderen

Tip #2: Limit by Language

Because these films and novels are in world languages, you may find a lot of the scholarship is also written in languages other than English. See if the database you choose to search in has a way to limit the language to English to find only articles in English.

Tip #3: Try more than one database

Tip #4: If you do not see an article about your work, look at articles about the author/director + the themes/techniques you are highlighting.
