Prerequisites & Corequisites
Students must first successfully complete PSY 2012 (General Psychology). Students must be currently enrolled in PSY 3213 (Research Methods in Psychological Science I).
Catalog Course Description
This course will provide students with an overview of the discipline of psychology, including expectations for the psychology major, career options for students completing a bachelor degree in psychology, and career options for students who pursue a graduate degree in psychology. Skills required for library research, writing in the style of the American Psychological Association, professional communication, and ethical and professional issues will be discussed.
Student Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course you should be able to:
- Identify myths about the psychology major and psychology as a discipline
- Describe the psychology degree requirements at UWF
- Identify the specializations within psychology
- Describe the career options available to students who complete different levels of training in psychology (i.e., bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctorate)
- Identify skills and knowledge expected by employers of psychology majors
- Identify skills and knowledge expected of successful applicants to graduate programs in psychology
- Demonstrate skill in searching the psychological literature for scholarly research and information about a specific career in psychology
- Demonstrate knowledge of APA style writing
- Identify effective learning strategies
- Identify and describe the ethical issues associated with psychology and writing (e.g., plagiarism)
- Demonstrate professional communication skills
