Film Studies

Keyword Strategies for Finding Articles & Books

To search for articles on film criticism, try searching for the film's title plus the director's name.

  • Example: Rules of the Game Renoir

To search for books, you may want to try the director's name only.

  • Example: Jean Renoir

Remember, you may be narrow in scope for articles and broader in scope for books. This does not mean you need to read the whole book. Rather, the chapter you need may not be listed in the database record.

Use filters in the databases to limit by publication dates and types of resources. Look at subject headings inside records for books and articles to identify more keywords.

Finding Context, Themes, & Topics

You may also find sources on historical, cultural and sociological concepts related to the films.

Examples:

social class Jean Renoir

French social class World War II
