Library Science: 21st Century Foundations for Success

Develop critical thinking skills through understanding the science of libraries and research

#1: Find a Book in the Catalog

The Library Catalog is the database where you find whole books, whole encyclopedias, whole journals (not just journal articles), films, music, maps, and government documents.

You may do that via the Find Books/Library Catalog bar on our homepage.

Here's a quick how-to:

#2: Find a Book on the Shelf

The second thing you want to do is look at the book's location. Library Science is used in grocery stores. We use categorical logic to classify things and have subtopics within them. This is why you don't find olives inthe dairy section!

Records is another word for results. Researchers read records!

This one says UWF Library Book Stacks. UWF Library refers to which library the book is in (did you know UWF has 3 libraries?). The Book Stacks refer to the collection in which the book is located.

Next, write down the book's call number and click on the Floor Map button to see which floor it is located on:

This is an example of how call numbers are arranged on the shelf:

#3: Check out!

Now you are ready to check out your book at the Circulation Desk... with your Nautilus Card!
